Holy Communion Instruction

In Holy Communion we gather together as a church family to eat & drink together to experience and celebrate the love of God. Through the words "given for you" & "shed for you... for the forgiveness of sin" show us that forgiveness of sin, life & salvation are given to us in the sacrament through these words.

Holy Communion instruction is given annually to the current 2nd grade class and to anyone else who desires instruction. The current dates for this year are:  Sunday, October 23 at 9:40 a.m. - Chalise Making / Sunday, November 6 at 9:40 a.m. - Instruction Class / Sunday, November 13 at 9:40 a.m. - Instruction.

First Communion Worship services will be Thursday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m. / Sunday, November 20 at 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.

Vacation Bible School

At Spark Summer
- Splash in God's Word kids will wade into God's Word! VBS at First United is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste. Bible Point crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, & tasty treats are just a few of the activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes & safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see God in everyday life-- something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!

So mark these dates on your calendar: July 30 - Aug 3.  The fun starts at 9:00 a.m. & ends at noon each day.  Ages for VBS are from 3 year olds (must be potty trained) to  5th Grade.  This year our VBS program is FREE!!

If you are interested in helping out for VBS or volunteering for the week, please let us know ASAP! There are many ways that you can help: arts & crafts, storytelling, games, movies, helping with preschoolers, donating food items & much more! We are in need of youth & adult volunteer leadership. Let us know what you would be interested in.

Family Ministries Philosophy

Here at First United our Children's Ministry and Youth & Family Ministries join together to form Family Minstry. We have formed a minstry model that takes into account the fact that they are all inter-related.  We are constantly building relationships with children and youth and getting to know their parents.  Faith is formed in personal trusted relationships and we understand that more often than not that happens at home. Through research done by Vibrant Faith Ministries it is evident that there are four keys that can nurture healthy relationships and faith.  Those keys are caring conversation, family rituals and traditions, family devotional life and intergenerational service to others that convery the beliefs, values and lifestyles of their home.

These four keys have become the new way for us to minister at First United Lutheran.

The purpose of Family Minisries is to help children & youth believe and understand the life in Jesus Christ.  A study done by Search Institute asked youth of mainline churches to identify the five top religious influences in their lives.  Parents ranked as the single most powerful influence in shaping faith.  The study emphasizes the role of relationships as a whole in faith formation and helps provide a clear picture of the path to effective family ministry.  Youth people grow in faith when these four elements support their faith development: parents, other caring adults, peers, and significant retreat/servant/camp events.  We need to be reminded that we are not Christians living in a bubble, Christianity is a communal faith.

First United Lutheran Family ministry programming is for children from birth to fifth grade and then 6th grade through high school though we have many crossover events that are family centered as well. Many events are held throughout the year for you to grow in your faith.  We recognize that we all come from varied backgrounds and we strive to provide a safe, non judgemental environment for people to ask questions and share their own stories.  All are welcome here!

Another key factor in family ministries is to have a balanced program.  The events offered throughout the year will include worship, outreach, learning and fellowship.  We extend an invitation to you to serve on our Family Ministry Committee and help make this continue to happen.  The committee meeting times vary so please contact the church office for more information.
